The Headless Horseman rides!

Whew! What a weekend we had. Traveling to Bend is always fun, whether it’s for some recreational mountain biking or some fast paced racing. This trip was no exception, but by the time we got back to Portland, we were really tired. Cross racing may be less than an hour, but it can really wear you out.

The weather during the two days was pretty amazing. The rain threatened to come down, but never really arrived. There were some pretty strong winds on the course during different parts of the day, but for the most part it was a mild weekend.

The racing however, was not. The course contained a mixture of pavement (not very much thankfully), loose dirt, and tacky grass. The course designers did a great job of mixing things up between Saturday and Sunday, squeezing every ounce of fun out of the available space.

Sunday’s race was costume themed, and it was a riot. There were all sorts of costumes to be seen, some of which were very elaborate. While the costumes lent a note of fun, the racing was still heated, and the crowds loved it.

Opting to take it easy, we decided to forgo the parties on Saturday night. As a group we cooked a healthy dinner and shared a few post race beers. The condo we stayed in also had a hot tub which helped soothe our sore muscles, something none of us have at home. Traveling has it’s benefits sometimes!

Now that we’re back in Portland, we’re gearing up for what is sure to be a wet race this Sunday at Barton Park (we’ve got our fingers crossed!). We’ve got out rubber boots, tents, and warm clothes ready to go. All that’s left is to watch the rain fall.
