On April 13th, Bike Gallery turned 35 years old!
It was 10:00 on a Saturday morning in 1974 when Bike Gallery opened its doors to the public for the first time. Our first sale was an Atami 1000 ten-speed bicycle for $109.95, sold to one of my sister’s friends who had been waiting patiently for us to open. We were grateful to accept her five $20 bills and one $10 bill, but we were even more grateful to have our first loyal customer. A great way to start a business!
This is a great time to take a minute to remember (out loud) how much we’ve accomplished over many years. Those years have seen many tens of thousands of happy customers bicycling throughout Portland, some recognition/awards for community service and outstanding customer service, and, of course, our hundreds of employees doing great work spreading the love of cycling throughout the community.
I want to express gratitude for the wonderful work Bike Gallery employees do, every day, in helping us realize our dream of a bike shop that takes excellent care of its customers. Dad mentioned to me many times how proud he was of what the company was accomplishing: great service, giving back to the community, and treating people like we want to be treated.
Most importantly, I want to thank all of our customers, each and every one. I so appreciate the business you’ve given Bike Gallery. I am proud to have changed your flats, overhauled your bike each winter, helped you choose your child’s first bike, and cheered you on at Cycle Oregon.
It’s been an amazing 35 years and I know all of us here look forward to what the next 35 years will bring.
Sincerely,
Jay

I am glad to have The Bike Gallery here in my community. I am a new bicyclist and appreciate that I don’t feel like an idiot when I go to get a question answered by any one of your excellent staff. I am impressed by not only the expertise, patience and the attentiveness but also the generosity of time and advice given to me whenever I visit.
Other shops may have cheaper prices and more selection but going to your stores, you have the people who consistently give good service no matter which store I go to or which person I talk with.

Thank you Jay.
Here’s to 35 more great years!
I bought an Atami from the BG in late 74 or early 75. I also have a Trek from BG that has a decal from when the store was on 51st and Sandy. As a matter of fact, I think I bought a bike from the BG at all three Sandy Blvd. locations. Not too many people remember all three locations!
