Portland International Raceway was busy on Memorial Day weekend, but not with the roar of internal combustion. Instead, a bunch of folks got together for the 10th annual Human Power Challenge, a series of races organized by Oregon Human Powered Vehicles (OHPV).
In addition to the various races and vehicle categories — including all sorts of really fast-looking recumbents with fairings — this was the second year of the ePower Challenge, which is a series of races for electric assist bikes (yes, some of those really fast-looking recumbents with fairings have high-tech motors too).
Bike Gallery arrived for the ePower Challenge on Monday to show off our new electric bike, the A2B from Ultra Motor. We chatted with some of the racers about battery technology and drag coefficient. The next thing I knew, I was revving the 500 watt electric motor of my A2B at the start line of the 14-mile race!
I’m still wondering how I got from sitting on the sidelines to sitting on the start line, but I had a great time. And while I may have been lapped by a bunch of really fast-looking recumbents with fairings, I enjoyed the rush of the air and the silence of a dozen electric motors at the raceway.

Hi Mickey. This sounds like a great event! I would like to hear about it if you could respond to my email address. Thanks!
That look’s like a cool competition glad you had fun on the electric bike. I hope that next year’s event will be just as Awesome.
Looks like a cool event. Maybe I will have to drive down there with my 13000 watt ebike and check it out.
