Brett Flemming demonstrates his patented derailleur hanger alignment tool at the Hollywood Bike Gallery
Bike Gallery service manager Brett Flemming has a knack for tools. This is no surprise; he uses tools all day long. But Brett is different than most bike mechanics. When he can’t find a tool he needs for a job, he creates his own in his personal machine shop. In fact, he’s built a pretty good reputation for himself as a bike tool maker. Many respected companies (Rocky Mountain and Mavic, for example) buy his tools, sold under his own brand, Efficient Velo Tools.
“When I’m in my shop I invent, prototype and manufacture better bicycle repair tools, as well as create or modify most anything made out of metal,” Brett says.
Even giants like Japan-based Shimano — leader of the global bicycle component market — are keen on Brett’s expertise. Shimano recently hired Brett on contract to develop a tool for aligning rear derailleur hangers, and, unsurprisingly, Brett came up with an innovative solution. So innovative, in fact, that the tool now proudly bears U.S. patent number 7467477.
Don’t let Brett’s prestige intimidate you; he’s actually a very friendly, approachable guy. Stop by the Hollywood Bike Gallery and see for yourself. He’ll talk bikes until the shop locks its doors for the night — occasionally even longer (you can catch him teaching clinics after hours during the riding season).
