Summer reading and a chance to win a bike

Barely second to my passion for bikes is my passion for books. I’m equal parts bibliophile and cyclist, have been for as long as I can remember. And when an opportunity presents itself to combine the two, I’m one happy little clam. The opportunity in this case is the Multnomah County Summer Reading Program. Ah, I have fond childhood memories of riding my brown cruiser bike around the neighborhood as fast as I could, and equally fond memories of reading book after book through summer reading programs at my local library.

So, when The Library Foundation offered Bike Gallery an opportunity to support Multnomah County’s reading program, how could I say no? Back in my day, it was ample reward to read a book, visit the librarian, and get a stamp on my summer reading passport. I can only imagine how excited all the kids in Multnomah County must be about reading — because they can read their way to winning some really cool prizes. For those participating in this cool program, the grand prize is a trip to Disneyland. WOW! And the runner-up prize is pretty cool too — and I’m proud to say is donated by Bike Gallery. The runner-up will win a complete kid’s bike package that includes a bike, helmet, lock AND a week-long session with the Community Cycling Center Bike Camp in 2010! SUPER WOW!

Kids become eligible for prizes by reading and filling a gameboard, which they can pick up at any Multnomah County Library, starting June 12 and ending August 31, 2009. Complete gameboards can be used to enter to win prizes, or help others in the community by helping to buy books for kids in homeless shelters and childcare centers.

So kids, have fun reading this summer and if you are lucky your next summer will be filled with reading AND bike fun! The Summer Reading Program is just kicking off so there’s plenty of time for kids to get started, earning prizes or books for other kids and having a blast visiting the library, exploring the world of books, and dreaming of a new bike.

Wishing kids of all ages a wonderful summer full of cycling and reading fun!
