Worst Day of the Year Ride: Feb 15

Don’t let Tuesday’s snow and the cold temperatures discourage you, spring is not far away. How can I tell? I’ve seen the signs: buds on the trees, birds arriving from their winter homes (I spotted a western tanager in my yard Saturday) and, it’s almost time for the Worst Day of the Year Ride (WDYR). That’s a sure sign it’s time to lube up your bike chain and get out for a ride.

Mark your calendar: the WDYR is Feb 15. It may take place in winter, on what is statistically the worst weather day of the year, but in reality it is a true harbinger of spring with a festive, fun atmosphere that you’d expect on a sunny summer day. After a winter of solo or small group rides this is also a great opportunity to get a jump on the cycling season, join thousands of other happy cyclists for a tour of the town. Besides, the WDYR is a benefit for the Community Cycling Center — you know the folks that run the Holiday Bike Drive, Create a Commuter, Summer Camp and more — so it’s for a great cause too! And any WDYR veteran can tell you, the whole ride is really about snacking. You’ll have snacks at all of the rest stops, and hot food at the finish. Expect to munch on doughnuts, fruit, soups, fresh foccacia bread, bagels and sip hot cocoa, spicy chai tea, and hot cider. Eat to ride, ride to eat… how does that saying go?

Choose from the 18-mile urban tour or a 40-mile optional Challenge Loop. Either route will bring you past the Hollywood Bike Gallery, so plan to stop and visit our rest stop during the ride — we’ll keep some cider hot for ya. AND don’t forget to drop by and pre-register at any one of our six stores before February 12 and save $5 on your registration fee.
