From Our Blog: Cyclocross Update

We're in the middle of another great cyclocross season and it seems like a good time to check in and see how the races are progressing. The early season races were mostly dusty and dry, but beginning with the Hillsboro race on October 25th, the ground has slowly become more and more water-logged. Last weekend's Singlespeed World Championships at PIR was a wet, muddy blast of a good time! The racers were treated to a Black Sabbath cover band, throngs of loud fans, and the Thunderdome, a geodesic structure supporting fans and announcers. There were over 150 racers in the event. In the Community: New Trail Program at Powell Butte

Do you bike, hike, or ride horses on Powell Butte?

This rainy season you will have the opportunity to participate in a pilot project to test the theory that people can have more trail access and take better care of the trails by staying off the trails when they are muddy.

In past wet seasons, Portland Parks & Recreation - City Nature managed a trail closure program that closed trails when wet. The trouble was, trails were closed when rain was expected or there were only a few wet spots. There were different opinions about what is wet. When will bike tires, horse hooves, feet, or paws damage trails? Portland Parks & Recreation - City Nature listened to trail user frustrations and agreed to a one season pilot project to test the theory that trail users can take good care of a nature park and its trails using self-management on trails.

You will see new signs posted at trailheads and trail junctions saying "trails closed when muddy."

If a trail is dry, enjoy! If a trail is muddy and you can see your tracks, please do not use it. Please do not skid, and please pass other trail users with consideration. Thanks for taking care of Powell Butte Nature Park!

A collaborative effort with: Northwest Trail Alliance, Portland Parks & Recreation, Friends of Powell Butte, and Equestrians.

Get Bike-Wise at our Fun and Free Clinics

The Bike Gallery's free clinics are a great way to learn more about bikes, how to maintain them, and how to ride them most efficiently. Fall and winter are a perfect time to learn from our experts, so you are "in the know" by the time spring season comes around.

Bike Gallery Clinics We offer our three basic clinics – flat repair, maintenance, and gear shifting – on a recurring basis at several of our stores through the winter months.

The format is casual classroom style with hands-on demos and plenty of opportunity for the audience to ask questions or share tips with fellow cyclists. No need to make reservations or to bring your bike.

Check our clinics page for dates and hours.
