This holiday season, we invite you to become a star on our Giving Tree by donating $5 or more to the Community Cycling Center (CCC) while you are shopping at Bike Gallery.
Here is how it works: throughout the holiday season, we will ask shoppers at our store if they like to "purchase" a donation of $5 or more to the CCC. In exchange for your donation, you'll receive a star that you can personalize with your name or a message. Your star will go in the Giving Tree that is centrally located in the store. Our goal is to see the Giving Trees in each of our stores covered with stars, by the time New Year's Day rolls around.
Your donation helps support the Holiday Bike Drive and other CCC programs. AND…for every star on our Giving Trees, Bike Gallery will donate $5 to the CCC!
The Community Cycling Center is a local non-profit organization with many programs that help build Portland’s cycling community. These programs focus on serving low-income individuals — adults and children. Each December, the CCC provides 500 children with lovingly refurbished bicycles, new helmets, and bike safety education. Best of all those children are also getting a holiday moment that will be remembered for the rest of their lives. So become a star today and help create that holiday magic for a needy child in our community!
In 2007, the Community Cycling Center...
• Promoted the health and safety of 543 youth in our bike safety programs including after school bike clubs and summer camp
• Fostered self-sufficiency by helping 373 low-income adults become bike commuters in our Adult Earn-a-Bike program
• Created new cyclists by giving 493 children from low-income families their first bike at the Holiday Bike Drive
• Increased personal safety of cyclists by giving away 400 sets of lights and educating recipients about visibility and security;
• Protected the environment by redirecting 1,076 bicycles from landfills to be given away in our programs or sold in our shop.
In 2008, the Community Cycling Center will...
• Provide 500 children from low-income families with refurbished bicycles, helmets, and safety education, working in partnership with local social service organizations
• Distribute 400 sets of lights to unlit cyclists through our Get Lit! program
• Provide over 500 adults living near the federal poverty line with a refurbished, fully-loaded, commuter bike, five hours of bicycle safety training, and a new helmet.
• Engage 1400 volunteers for 11,000 hours
• Collect 3,000 bicycles at bicycle collections around the Metro area throughout the year
• Refurbish 2,000 donated bicycles, diverting them from the landfill and putting them back on the road in our community
